The Goal

To educate, equip and enable the girl students with intensification of Knowledge quotient, Skill quotient, Emotional quotient, Social quotient, Physical and wellness quotient, Professional quotient, Value and spiritual quotient.

The Context

Majority of our students come from less privileged and economically backward section of the society. Unable to pursue higher education, they aim at taking up employment after completion of BCom. Students also wish to take up part-time jobs to support self as well as their family. Some of the students who are unable to pay the fees wish to discontinue their education. Sthree Sabalikaran practice aims to provide solid rock support to overcome the challenges.

The Practice

In tune with the Vision of the college, 115 Student Support activities/systems is designed for holistic development our students. The support system is offered under the following titles:

Financial support is provided for the girl students who come from economically backward family/ students with single parent/ daughters of divyangjan through the following facilities. Government Scholarships is extended to the students as per the government norms. Institutional Financial support is given by connecting them to the philanthropies. Merit scholarships - Meritorious students get deduction in fee during admission. General Insurance Benefit covers students as well as parents’ major health problems. Endowment Cash Prizes are for meritorious students based on their academic performance. Vidyarthi Kshemabhivriddhi Nidhi is a scholarship given to the children of teachers. Teacher Sponsored Special Prizes are to motivate the topper in respective subjects.

Book Bank Facility for SC/ST students, Vasavi Book bank facility for meritorious students. Remedial Classes for the slow learner’s improvement.

Bridge Course for the First-year students.

Tutorials – Revision Classes to revise the syllabus and increase the confidence of the students.

Availability of Old Question Papers and E- Content – on website for easy accessibility to the syllabus.

Experiential Learning is provided through Internship for V semester students, Exhibition cum sale to promote entrepreneurial skills, Extension activities such as plantation, volunteering as a Scribe, Participation in workshops, Educational trips, industry visits, theatre, Hobby classes like ‘Rakhi’ making, paper-jewellery, silk-thread-jewellery, VVN News Bulletin editing, a compilation of information, and designing, Classroom discussions, debates, presentations by students, brainstorming activities, role plays all contribute towards vibrant experiential learning making our students confident individuals.

Knowledge quotient

Guest Lectures and workshops are organised on various topics to impart knowledge beyond the textbook. Film Screening is done to teach the students values and text related topics. Computer lab, Business Lab and English Language Lab are set up to support the students learning through ICT tools.

Skill quotient

Training in making handicrafts using waste paper, silk thread, cloth is provided for the students. To enhance entrepreneurial skills Exhibition cum sale event PROTHSAHA event is organised to sell their handicrafts. V.V.N. News Bulletin and Sougandhi provide.

Emotional quotient

Emotional Awareness, managing one’s own emotions, self-motivation, managing others emotions, improve interpersonal relationship Sadguna Sadhane, Soft Skills Training program.

Social quotient

Students are involved in Social Service, Community internship. Awareness programs and rallies on saving Water resources, Waste segregation, Energy conservation, Vermiculture, Organic compost, Vertical gardening and Human chain events are organized. V.V.N. Scribe Bank provides students an opportunity to work for Persons with Disability (PWD).

Physical and wellness quotient

Annual Health Check-up, Blood Donation camps by Lions Club, Swatch Baharat, and various awareness programs are the best practices of our institution. Yoga and Karate classes are conducted for healthy practice and self-defence respectively. Gymnasium is available for free of cost. MoU with Rangadurai Memorial Hospital for health care assistance during Emergencies.

Professional quotient

ICT training from Basics to Advance is given invariably to all the students sought admission in V.V.N. Degree College. Computer Fundamentals for I Year, Communication Skills for I Year, Ms Office - II Year, Soft Skills for II Year, Coral Draw for III Year, Photoshop for III Year, GST for III Year, Tally ERP 9 for III Year, Campus to Corporate Training III year. The college has following Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) for enhancing the above-mentioned professional training for our students:

  • NICT, Bengaluru for Computer based training courses.
  • Samvit Academy for CA Foundation Training Course
  • People’s Skill Foundation, Bengaluru for Soft Skill Training Program.
  • MoU is with Cothas Coffee for Internships.

Value and spiritual quotient

Sadguna Sadhane – an orientation program for I year students is organised every year. Anti-Sexual Harassment and Anti Ragging Committees also contribute towards making the students realise the right values. Grievance cell and Feedback practice makes the students more expressive about their rights.

Evidence of Success

In the last five years totally 2,310 students have undergone training in Computers and Soft Skills in five years. With the above value addition to their B.Com. Course, our star students - Geeta TR, Sathyvathi, and Dimpleshree have found coveted employment with Infosys, and ACCENTURE companies. The incremental growth of progression of most of our students shows an improvement at the exit level as compared to their respective entry levels. Thus, the college apart from reaching out equity, inclusiveness and access to higher education to our girl students, has also been providing an entering wedge to join the mainstream MNC jobs.

Challenges encountered and resources

Time constraint is the major problem in the conduct of the training programs due to semester system. Education leads to Empowerment is the motto of the institution. As majority of the students come from mother tongue medium of language in lower classes, which throws a tough challenge for the teachers in making the students shift to English medium.

Divyangajan Mitra

To support the Visually-challenged students pursuing higher education.

The Goal

  • To enhance the communication between specially-challenged and other students and to promote student to student peer - learning.
  • To remove the misconceptions about persons with disabilities by bringing students with and without disabilities on to a common and shared learning platform.
  • To provide an opportunity for all students to develop the much-needed inclusive attitudes, values, and skills, to live and work alongside the less-fortunate, in a diverse situation and society.

The Context

VVN Degree College has played a pivotal role in sensitizing Bangalore University on the problems faced by the visually challenged students studying under Bangalore University. This was due to a visually challenged student Shilpa S. As a result, our teacher approached the Bangalore University and reported to the Vice Chancellor. The University set up a Committee for Demographic Study of Visually Challenged Students Studying under Bangalore University and Prasanna Udipikar, HOD of English was made the Convener and her initiative resulted in Braille Resource Centre at Bangalore University.

Practice

VVN Scribe Bank volunteers go as scribes to assist visually challenged students to write exams. Students are involved in providing recorded audio books and notes for the needy. Students also visit the hostels run by NGOs to teach the visually challenged. VVN Scribe Bank name is listed in the PWD supporters list of National Federation of the Blind (Karnataka). Honorary Service is rendered in compiling and editing the Annual Souvenir of the National Federation of the Blind (Karnataka). Awareness of Braille Script was conducted by Canara Bank Relief Fund Matruchaya Braille Resource Centre. During Inter college fest AAKARSH VVN, ‘Master Quiz’ is conducted every year exclusively for visually challenged students and cash prize of Rs. 1000/- and participation certificates are given to all the participants.

Evidence of success

Our visually challenged students Shilpa S (2015-16), got recruited by State Bank of India due to the support rendered by the institution and Low visioned Muskan Khanum (2019-20) scored 84% in Final year BCom and is presently pursuing M. Com at Bengaluru City University. Our students are invited as translators for Quiz programs conducted for Visually Challenged in Bangalore University.

Challenges encountered and resources required:

Due to internal tests, many a times the volunteers are unable to write exams for visually challenged. The visually challenged students located in far of places cannot be accessed. As the preferred program of Visually challenged girls is B.A., admission for BCom course in our institution is scarce.
